ABOUT UUSMR

Providing Financial Support to Retired UU Ministers and their Spouses

For over 175 years the Society for Ministerial Relief has made grants to help clergy and their surviving spouses, over age 55, who find themselves in financial hardship. Ministers and their spouses give so much to others, and it’s our privilege to help colleagues to live more comfortably in their retirement years.

We make grants based on need, taking into account one’s particular circumstances. These can be ongoing annual grants to supplement one’s income, or one-time grants to help pay for medical expenses or other unanticipated needs. We also make grants to retired colleagues and survivors in Transylvania and the Philippines, and the UUSMR makes over $500,000 in disbursements each year.

Please reach out to us if you need help, or if you have questions about whether you meet the income levels to be eligible. Our Secretary, Rev. Dr. Susan Suchocki Brown, will be glad to connect with you. Or you can apply for assistance by completing this form.

Thank you for your service to our Unitarian Universalist living tradition!

What They Are Saying

From beneficiaries in the United States and Canada:

“I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate the assistance that you have extended me. It has made all the difference. As these final years gain speed, it has been a blessing to be able not only to cope with the outlandish costs of health care but still be able to have an occasional day out and the rare trip to see our children and grandchildren.”

From beneficiaries in the United States and Canada:

“I have much to be grateful for. One of the really big ones is your contribution to my way of life. Growing up during the Great Depression, and an orphan to boot, taught me how to make the most of every cent. But your funds mean that I can live without worrying about every penny. I can now afford to take one trip a year and also to be more generous with my children who are such wondrous creatures but are struggling financially.”

And from the Consistory of the Hungarian Unitarian Church:

“We recognize the essential role of the UU Society for Ministerial Relief in acting as a successful builder of social justice and human compassion. The Society has been the main financial help, next to their monthly pension, that has eased the needs of our Transylvanian Unitarian ministers and their survivors who always express their gratitude and thanks.”
